A brand-new social app called Shredder officially launched on August 7, aiming to bring skiers and snowboarders back together in a sport its founders say has become too isolated and expensive.

Created by skier and SnowBrains writer Alfred Arnaud and snowboarder Brody Sanchez, Shredder is a free iOS app that blends GPS ride tracking with tools for finding compatible riding partners, organizing meetups, and arranging carpools. The first rollout is focused on New Zealand’s Southern Alps, targeting ski towns like Queenstown and Wānaka and nearby resorts including The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, and Cardrona.

Designed to Rebuild Ski Community
“We want to make skiing feel like a community again,” Arnaud said. Shredder’s standout feature is its AI-powered rider-matching system, which uses behavioral data to connect people with others at a similar skill level.

The app also includes offline-capable GPS ride tracking, capturing stats such as speed, runs, vertical drop, and total distance. Data syncs automatically once you’re back in range.

More Than Just Ride Tracking
Shredder is built for more than recording your day on the slopes. Users can:

  • Host or join group sessions

  • Find new ski and snowboard partners

  • Organize carpools to cut costs and reduce parking congestion

Sanchez emphasized that Shredder will stay “free forever,” with no subscription fees or premium tiers planned.

Tackling Skiing’s Rising Costs
With lift ticket prices and travel expenses climbing every year, skiing and snowboarding have become less accessible for newcomers. According to Snow sports Industries America, these rising costs have also left many enthusiasts riding alone more often.

Shredder’s founders believe the app can help close that gap, encouraging carpooling, lowering expenses, and bringing the social side of skiing back into focus.

What’s Next for Shredder
For now, the app is concentrating on New Zealand’s Southern Hemisphere season, but plans are already in place to expand to Northern Hemisphere resorts ahead of winter 2025–26.

“We’re building this with you, not for you,” Arnaud said.

The Bottom Line

The Shredder app is more than a tracking tool, it’s a way to meet new riding partners, organize trips, and make skiing more affordable and connected. Whether you’re chasing powder in New Zealand or planning for next season in North America, Shredder helps you ride more, spend less, and share the stoke. Download it now for free on iOS and join the movement to bring the ski and snowboard community back together.
